The St. George Hotel built in 1917, right across the street from the Chattanooga Choo Choo, is boarded up. Once a blue collar hotel for those who were shipping their goods on the train, it now is in dire need of restoration.
Cornerstones, a local preservation group, partnered with the Interior Design department of UTC (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga), to create four proposals for the restoration and re-use of this fine building.
The results were amazing. The four groups, of three students each, presented several varied and very creative uses for the building. The designs included mixed uses such as a grocery store, a pharmacy, a flower shop, restaurants, bars, spas, new entries, apartments, and hotel rooms.
In the video you’ll see what the interior of the building looks like, the four team’s presentations and who won the final award for the best overall presentation and use of the building. Watch the video and then comment on how you would use the building.
